Arctic Boat Safari and seasonal whale watching in Northen Norway
Whale watching is a seasonal activity for travelers visiting Senja island in north of Norway. Quite often around January and February we tend to have killer whales and humpback whales coming to Mefjord to feed. The whales are following the herring that stays just nearby at certain times in winter.
One of main experiences that we can recommend for Winter Activity Enthusiasts is Arctic Boat Safari. For this trips we use our Deluxe Big Boat with heating, comfortable sitting inside and possibility to walk around the deck for greater views. The trip focuses on experiencing North Norwegian marine life, spotting white-tailed sea-eagle, cruising along the fjord and admiring beautiful coastal nature.
Arctic Boat Safari is an all year long activity. Beautiful midnight sun in the summer and in winter for the lucky ones, it may also be possible to see populations of killer whales and humpback whales if they are staying around Senja. On certain dates we have also observed a small population of fin whales, the biggest of all three.
Here are recent statistics regarding whale watching:
Year 2016: We had almost daily whale sightings from early January till first week of March
Year 2017: We had almost daily whale sightings from early January till mid-February
Year 2018: During the New Year’s period we had some good days with humpback & killer whales, but around middle of January the whales disappeared and we could see them again from mid-February till early April on an irregular basis (approximately 25% of expeditions)
Latest update for whale watching
In winter 2018 we have not been so lucky as previous years. The whales skipped Tromsø area and were staying a bit longer north-east of our region in the early part of season (Nov & Dec 2017), coming to waters around Senja just briefly. Due to this unusual patterns in whales’s behavior we feel obliged to update our guests who are specifically interested in whale safari that spotting these beautiful animals is not (and has never been) guaranteed. We are keeping our fingers crossed: the possibility to see whales is subject to change at anytime. This is nature and probably one of the best parts of it is experiencing its own ways it follows and make most of it!
For those interested in joining our Arctic Boat Safari focusing on spotting sea-eagles, marine wildlife and beautiful nature. Our guides will make sure this is an interesting experience that may or may not include spotting humpback whales, killer whales or seals.
We offer daily Arctic Boat Safari throughout winter
