Halibut Trophy Fishing 2017
Book your holiday and join us at “Halibut” fishing season late summer 2017
Deep Sea Fishing on Senja in Norway
from mid-March until October
Mefjord Brygge offers easy access to some of the best big halibut and cod fishing spots in Norway. We are proud to offer excellent trophy fishing possibilities.
The cod comes from the Barents Sea passing just outside mouth of the fjord and this provides a fantastic fishing all year in Mefjord, especially during March to May. There are many recommended GPS positions and fishing areas within a radius of 20 km. From Skreigrunndsdjupet to Fallbakken there are several interesting fishing areas.
Cod, pollack, haddock, cusk and catfish are the most common species in the area. You can encounter both big and small halibut. Halibut has been fished very well in recent years. This is most likely thanks to the fact that shrimp trawlers were prohibited in the fjords many years ago and halibut population was left to grow large. At Mefjord Brygge fishermen catch halibut almost daily in the season. Take the additional challenge and if you are lucky you will get it up from the depths. For instance Askebåen and Vesterbåen are both a well known halibut spots.
After fishing you can fillet the fish and clean it in a well organized and supplied with fresh water fish cleaning facilities. Then you can put your fish in a spacious freezer until you take it home upon departure.

There are 20 boats parked at our two floating bridges. We offer rental of 19 feet Kværnø aluminum boats equipped with 50 horse power four stroke engines, GPS, chart plotter and fish finder. The boats are very good and safe for the conditions that are on the far side of the island, towards open ocean. The boats are also equipped with AIS (Automatic Identification System) to improve security and safety. This makes sure we can follow your boat’s position from the land and send a rescue boat in case of an emergency.
Sea fishing: Mefjord Brygge lies close to some of the best coastal Norway places to fish. Cod flows from Barents Sea, passing just outside the mouth of the fjord and this provides a wonderful fishing all year round, Down at the pier you will finding all necessary facilities – room for preparing and cleaning fish, cold storage and life jackets in all sizes. We also rent out fishing equipment, clothing and fishing guides.
Big boat fishing: Mefjord Brygge can organize fishing trips with larger boat and skipper. Necessary outfit and fishing equipment can be rented.
What kind of fish can you catch in the different months?
April – this is definitely the best month for fishing large cod called “skrei”, reaching up to 30-40 kg. This type of cod comes down from the Barents Sea in the end of December and stays till the end of April or early May. “Skrei” has distinctive whitish colour of its body, as opposed to coastal cod, having a bit more golden-brown body texture, aquired from seaplants. This is very easy to see for an experienced fisherman. “Skrei” is traveler-type cod, thus having more physical fitness and better developed muscles, therefore it is considered to be a better quality meat. Skrei has very clean and white meat. At this time you will be side by side with local fishermen who fish for cod and you will experience how real cod fishing is done! Of course you can also fish the same fish species which you will get in the other period, from May to July.
May – July – in this period you will catch more of the other fish species such as halibut, pollock, haddock, catfish, redfish, flounder and monkfish. At this time small and medium-sized coalfish move into fjord – those weigh up to 0.5-4 kg, while the bigger ones stay outside the fjord.
August and September – in this period you will catch the the same species as in May-July. The main difference is that in late summer you will get bigger coalfish, reaching about 4 to 15 kg, also in the fjord! At this time the chances of catching a big halibut are significantly higher! Usually, August is one of the best summer months for fishing. Regarding weather in September, you can compare it in terms of temperature and wind to May and June.
