Summer Time Activities
We have prepared a range of summer time activities that will fill your needs and make your time at Mefjord Brygge an unforgettable experience.
Hiking. Senja is an excelent place for hiking. You can choose among different tours, ranging from simple small trips in the lowlands through moderate and advanced, demanding summit hikes. It is also possible to pass Senja across. Most of the suggested trails are well marked. Additionally maps and brochures to help you find the right trip are available. These are sold by the various tourism businesses or Destination Senja’s office in Silsand. We recommend “10 på topp”, sold in the same places, gas stations, etc.
Below, you can start with a virtual hike from Kyle, a nearby mountain!
Guided tours. Mefjord Brygge offers guided tours in the mountains and around nature. You can choose from short walks of around 1 to 2 hours and longer trails in the area. We offer excellent trips matching your level of fitness. One of our suggestions is an easy trip to a nearby vantage point Knuten, where in the summer you can see the midnight sun. For more adventureous travelers we have prepared moderate and advanced hikes to scenic mountains around Mefjord, for this kind of longer trips we will need to bring some food. We can also offer lowland hikes with a local guide who will introduce you to Mefjordvær’s rich history. Ask in the reception of Mefjord Brygge for more information and detailed descriptions of the tours available.
Walking. In Mefjordvær you will find a very unique path network that is created under the auspices of Mefjordvær Bygdelag (Mefjordvær village association) and local people. The hiking trails are well marked and in some places wooden bridges/paths are prepared so usually you can pass without making your shoes wet. The paths go around Mefjordvær lowlands and on this tour you will find picnic areas, shelters and viewpoints to take a picture. Mefjordvær has Scandinavia’s largest pier as the ocean overflows when it storms. In calm weather you can walk around and meet locals. There is an easy access trail to the viewpoint Knuten where you will be amazed by panoramic views of the fjord, mountains and Mefjordvær. The mountains are waiting for those seeking climbing adventures, for which we can recommend a trip to the “Devil’s Jaw” (Oksehornan).
Surfing / kitesurfing. There are various beaches around the outer edge of Senja, which are fantastic for this type of activity. Some of them are Bova, Ersfjord and Laukvik. Choose beach depending on the wind direction – talk to the locals.
Watersports. In Mefjord Brygge we have a big inflatable banana, water skiing and a variety of boards for hire. RIB-tour (a rigid inflatable boat) can also be arranged.
Sea Eagle / Fjord – Safari. Come to visit Europe’s largest predator, a white-tailed eagle, with a wingspan of up to 2 meters. On these tours you will see eagles and sea birds in their habitat among majestic mountains and spectacular natural surroundings. At the start of the tour at Mefjord Brygge we will get life jackets and some initial information about your trip. Then we continue the trip by taking a boat along the fjord, where we experience abundant bird life. On our tours we are almost guaranteed to see the eagles and we are lucky if we can experience the magic moment when the eagles follow the boat and dive after fish! The tour ends with a delicious fish soup. Complete satisfaction guaranteed.
Freshwater Fishing. There are good opportunities for freshwater fishing around Mefjordvær. Just about 300 meters from Mefjord Brygge you will find a river that flows into the sea. Here it is possible to start fishing nearby the sea for sjøbørtingen, then you can fish along the river to the lakes that lie a bit upriver. We call them Lillevannet, Storvannet og Smådalsvannet. At Storvannet there is a shelter made by Mefjordvær Bygdelag that is free to use by everyone. It is important to clean it after use. Mostly it is small fish, but you may be lucky to catch a fish of 1/2 kg.
Rowing. Take our little rowing boat and enjoy the tranquility around the harbor of Mefjordvær. See if you can spot sandy spots on the bottom. This is something the kids have been up to for generations!
